Announcements – May 1, 2016

Welcome to St. George’s We are glad you have chosen to worship with us today! Please sign our guest book and join us for refreshments and fellowship after each service.

Children and youth gather in the Chapel at 9:00 am to sing and share good news before moving to classes. Ages 3 thru 5th grade use Godly Play. Our teens’ lessons are prepared by Brian Maves.

The Rector’s Forum meets in the parish hall at 9:10, where Father Dale is teaching verse by verse through the Gospel of Mark.

The Lambeth Bible Study, a second option for adults, meets in the conference room. This study uses the Gospel reading for the day.

Deanery Ascension Service to kick off our Wave of Prayer for Evangelism and Renewal on Thursday, May 5th at St. Andrew’s in Edwardsville. Please see the insert for more information and a list of services offered during this special call to prayer.

Since we won’t have our traditional Ice Cream Social after the service in Edwardsville, St. George’s will use the Ascension readings again on Sunday, May 8, Mother’s Day, followed by, yes, ice cream!

End of Year Celebration & Potluck Breakfast – Bring something to share – fruit, pastry, eggs, etc. – and join us in the parish hall on Sunday, May 22nd, at 9:00 am. We have lots of fun, good food, and an opportunity to support our children and thank the wonderful people who minister to them throughout the year. Please plan to come show our students, teachers, and parents how much we appreciate them, and enjoy the company of you parish family.

Volunteers are needed Saturday, May 14, to help sort and store donations to our Food Pantry from the Letter Carriers Food Drive. We will begin sorting about 1:30 pm, and if you come for an hour, or two or three, we could use your help! Thank you.

The Forward Day by Day devotionals for May – July are available in the narthex. Please feel free to take one!

Volunteers are needed to help with mowing the church lawn. We mow in April, June, August, and October – St. Mark covers the other months. If you can help with this task from time to time, please contact Joe Hooten. Thank you!

Deacon Jody will be in New Mexico May 5 – 9 for her mother’s burial. The office will be closed Thursday, Friday, and Monday.

WEDG – The Women’s Ecumenical Dining Group will meet for dinner at Zapata’s Mexican Restaurant on Thursday, May 19th, at 6:30 pm. Join us at their new location at 4660 North Illinois Street in Fairview Heights (in the shopping center on the northeast corner of Highway 159 and Frank Scott Parkway, 277-5474). We need a head-count, so please call the church office for reservations. Come for Good Fun, Good Food, and Good Conversation!!

FNCA Summer Day Camp – The Franklin Neighborhood Community Association‘s 24th Annual Summer Day Camp is June 6 thru July 15. Each day runs 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm and offers recreational, educational, and life skills programs. About a third of the campers will begin with tutoring at 10:00 am. This program is one of FNCA’s larger and most successful programs. The fee is $40 each for the six week session, but actual cost per camper is $200. In addition to scholarships and personnel, funds are needed for supplies, activities, and busses. During May we ask your help to “Send a Kid to Camp.” Envelopes for your donations are available in the narthex. Please help if you are able, and thank you.

Can you host Coffee Hour once in a while? Everyone enjoys the fellowship after the 10:30 service, but only 10 families (and one in training) take turns making coffee and setting things out. Some of our hosts provide elaborate snacks, but all we really need is coffee, juice, and cookies. St. George’s can even cover the cost as needed, lease speak to Deacon Jody if you are interested.

All baptized persons are welcome to receive Communion. We believe this is Christ’s Body and Blood, according to Christ’s very promise. One appropriately receives the consecrated wafer on your hands (right over left) and raises it to your mouth, or receives it directly on your tongue. Then assist the chalice bearer in guiding the chalice to your lips. If you wish to receive by “intinction”, leave the host on your palm and the chalice bearer will pick it up, intinct, and place it on your tongue. Do not intinct yourself – this prevents fingers touching the wine. If you do not wish to receive the chalice, please indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest.
